What Voter Priorities I Learned from Phone Banking

This past Wednesday, I participated in phone banking efforts focused on California’s 48th congressional district, a seat that will undergo a political transition following the retirement of incumbent Darrell Issa. The purpose of the phone banking initiative was to gather information on voters’ political participation and to gauge support for several Democratic candidates. Calls were structured to first identify whether individuals intended to vote, then to assess if they leaned toward Democratic representation, and finally to understand the reasons behind their preferences. Although many calls were short and procedural, those who actively participated allowed me to be more cognizant of the electorate’s current political concerns.

One of the most prominent topics discussed throughout the calls I made was the current conflict in Iran and its growing impact on the United States economy. The electorate exemplified a strong understanding of the ongoing developments in the Middle East, including topics such as the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz and the geopolitical implications of a declining global oil supply. Not only were people aware of distant conflicts, but they were also actively connecting them to domestic implications, such as augmented gas prices, grocery costs, and general national security.

At the same time, the experience made clear to me the various levels of civic engagement of voters in that district. Some were eager to share their opinions on current policy and confirm their intent to vote, while others became immediately disengaged with the topic. Not only did it serve as a method of data collection, but also a mechanism for reminding people of the importance of their participation directly because of their growing concerns about current affairs.

I look forward to continuing to complete more hours of phone banking and seeing whether similar or different concerns arise from those who live in various regions across the United States.
